Are ChatGPT images high enough resolution to print?
It depends on the print size, not the DPI number in the file. A ChatGPT image has about 1.5 million pixels (a wide one is about 1774 × 887). Spread over a business card, that's about 450 pixels per inch. Over an A3 poster, about 90. Over a 2 m banner, about 23.
DPI in one minute
DPI (or ppi) means pixels per inch at the size you print. The number saved inside the file, often 72, is just a label: what counts is the image's pixels divided by the printed size.
At VISKO, an image below 90 ppi at its printed size means we ask for a new file. Below 150 ppi, we point it out on your proof so you can decide. Business cards need more: 150 at least, 300 for best results.
Pixels you need, by print size
| Best (150 ppi) | Minimum (90 ppi) | |
|---|---|---|
| Business card, 90 × 55 mm | 1063 × 650 (at 300 ppi) | 531 × 325 (at 150 ppi) |
| A4, 210 × 297 mm | 1240 × 1754 | 744 × 1052 |
| A3, 297 × 420 mm | 1754 × 2480 | 1052 × 1488 |
| A1, 594 × 841 mm | 3508 × 4967 | 2105 × 2980 |
| Sign, 600 × 900 mm | 3543 × 5315 | 2126 × 3189 |
| Banner, 1000 × 2000 mm | 5906 × 11811 | 3543 × 7087 |
These are for an image that fills the whole print. An image covering a quarter of the width needs a quarter of the pixels across.
Three ways to print bigger
- Make the image a part of the design, not all of it. Let ChatGPT build the layout in a full-size PDF: headline, colours and logo as vectors, your image placed at a size it can cover. A 1774 × 887 image covers up to 500 mm wide (300 mm for the sharpest result).
- Upscale it. An upscaler is a tool that adds pixels by guessing detail. 4× takes a ChatGPT image to about 170 ppi across a 600 × 900 mm sign, but only to about 90 across a full 2 m banner, the bare minimum. It can't fix wrong letters or invent detail that wasn't there.
- Turn logos and text into vectors. Vectors are shapes described by maths, so they stay sharp at any size. Ask ChatGPT to redraw a simple logo as vector shapes (SVG), and to put words in the PDF as real text rather than inside the picture.
Check your image's pixels: on a Mac, open it in Preview and choose Tools → Show Inspector. On Windows, right-click the file → Properties → Details.
Make a print-ready PDF for a [size] [banner/sign/poster] using my image. Page size [size + 10 mm] including 5 mm bleed on each side. CMYK colours. Keep all text and logos at least [35 mm for banners, 5 mm for signs and posters] from the trimmed edge. Draw the text and background as vectors, embed the fonts, keep total ink at or below 300%, make small text 100% black, and place my image no wider than 500 mm.
What we check before anything prints
In the chat, in seconds: the file opens, it's a PDF, the page count, CMYK colour, and that the page has the shape of the size you ordered, portrait or landscape.
After you pay, a person reviews it: bleed, text and logos inside the safe area, image resolution at the printed size, text height, embedded fonts and total ink. Then we send you a proof. Nothing prints until you approve it.
We don't edit files. If something needs changing, we tell you exactly what, in words your AI can act on.

Can I ask ChatGPT for a 4K image?
As of October 2026, asking in the prompt doesn't make the download bigger. Upscale it, or keep the image smaller in the layout.
Is 72 DPI too low?
The number saved in the file doesn't matter. Count the pixels and divide by the print size.
What's the lowest resolution you'll print?
90 ppi at the printed size (150 for business cards). Between that and 150 ppi (300 for business cards), we flag it on your proof and you decide.
